You don’t need to transfer.
I’ve done this with my domain, I can give you a brief summary of what worked:
1) Buy domain from Godaddy
2) Create account with everydns.com for this domain
3) Insert everydns name servers into godaddy domain information (ns1.everydns.com)
4) Get a server or VPS
5) Install and configure apache2, php and sql on server
6) create A records on everydns pointing to server (ex> hyperport.net -> 178.18.17.77)
7) Wait a few hours for DNS entry to populate around the servers of the internet
And then you are forwarded to your webhost when you use the domain name.

Yes that is possible
You will point using the DNS (NS records) record of the hosting company and attach it to the Domain
Yes.
Buy your domain from:
http://www.goldpuma.com
Ue this free web host:
http://www.atspace.com
with no forced ads.
Hope this helps.
Basically the process here is VERY simple.
All you need to do is buy your domain from a register (dont use godaddy. they are expensive and the service sucks. Use a site like http://www.namecheap.com/?aff=4152 or http://name.com ). Once you bought your domain find a free host that accepts your own domain and all you will need to do is change your domain’s “nameservers” to the ones the host tells you.
Thats it; no transferring or anything.
For a free host I suggest you try http://vlexofree.com . They offer a very good free hosting.
yes yes its indeed possible, for instance i bought domain name from http://www.tucktail.com/ and hosted it with http://www.xnynz.com/ , so that to cut costs
